age … more than a number?

Technology has a tendency to highlight the generation gap. It used be the running joke that if you wanted to program your VCR that you should ask a ten year old to do it for you.

Back in the days when I was paid actual money for performimg menial tasks, I was considered something of a technology guru (yes, I laugh too). Just because I could use google. Of course I never told them how easy it was … they might have realised I was faking it!

And I’ve also noticed there are those people who will phone you to let you know they are sending you an email. I’m holding my BlackBerry, taking a call from you telling me to check for an email. By the time you’ve finished your salutations, I COULD HAVE READ THE EMAIL.

My husband is three months yonger than me. I love his birthday because it means he’ll stop the “cradle snatcher” jokes he uses at every opportunity between my birthday and his.

I was trying to explain Plurk to him on the weekend. He’s pretty geeky, and my other port of call when I have technical issues, but he just doesn’t get it. He actually said “I’m getting too old”. I know I’m getting old because of the grey hairs and the wrinkles. He knows he’s getting old because he doesn’t ‘get’ plurk :P

Happy birthday, sweetie!

walking on (Mac) Air

I have previously mentioned my seemingly inherent inability to remember important dates … like our anniversary. Or my husband’s birthday. Fortunately for me, these two dates fall closely enough together that I can get away with buying a combined gift, if said gift is big enough.

Being avid Mac fans here, of course we took ourselves into the City as fast as we could today to check out the new Apple store. I made him hand over his wallet before we walked in and told him if he tried to swap the children for anything, I’d be very disappointed, and then in we went.

I was overcome … all that geekiness in one place, all that humming electrical excitement, all that shiny glass, the insane crowds … I was so moved, I told my lovely husband that he could have a Mac Air as a combined birthday and anniversary (and Christmas, for the next five years) present.

As we left - him with the baby and the new purchase, I said, “be careful carrying the baby across the road … oh, and be careful with Sophia too”. I don’t know if he realised I was joking :P

twas brillig, and the slithy toves

*(Hats off to Mr Lewis Carroll for Jaberwocky, and his wonderfully creative inventiveness with language)

I wonder just how many new words the internet has brought into being … words that sound foreign and silly when you first hear them but before you know it they’ve entered the vernacular and you wonder why it ever sounded strange. Like blog … does anyone even remember a time when they didn’t know what blog was? Or google, or cookies that you don’t eat.

My most recent would have to be plurk. When I first heard it I thought it sounded like the noise a baby makes when it possets. But it’s growing on me. In spite of my short plurking life, I have started to think in the third person in short bursts.

How would I explain plurk?  It’s basically timelined, micro-blogging/instant messaging. For me, it’s a place to actually type out all those stupid thoughts that come to mind and let other people read them. And it turns out, those thoughts are just as boring in type as they are in my head!

Great, huh?!
